For more than 15 years, the Morris Plains Education Association has been sending treats to our soldiers serving away from home. It has taken on various forms, beginning with a “cookie swap”. That very first year, staff students and community members baked, packed and shipped 10 cases of cookies and other homemade treats. In later years, proteins, cards & games, eye drops and other personal care items were added to snack items and packed in stockings to be shipped in time for the holidays.
As the needs of our soldiers have evolved, so have the volunteers. Over the years we’ve been joined by scouting organizations, local civic organizations and sporting teams to help with collecting, packing and shipping. This year, three 6th grade girls undertook the task as part of their “20 Time” project. They assisted in collecting more than 250 pounds of treats and personal care items that were sent to 5 different soldiers serving away from home. The generosity of our community has assured that each soldier will receive plenty to share with their battle buddies and bunk-mates! The Morris Plains Education Association continues to be the sole financial support of the ongoing venture.
